Located on the James River, Richmond was founded in 1607 and is home to more than 400 years of American history including the site of Patrick Henry's famous "Give me liberty or give me death" speech and the former capital of the Confederacy.

Turn back the clock with visits to the area's many restored homes and buildings, some of which offer historical re-enactments. Richmond has many statues, particularly on Monument Avenue and the Capitol grounds. Most are dedicated to military and Civil War leaders, while the newest monument is dedicated to Arthur Ashe Jr., the internationally-known tennis player and philanthropist who was born and raised in Richmond.

Outdoors, don't miss Maymont, a 100-acre Victorian estate that is open year-round for visitors to enjoy the breathtaking gardens and landscapes. Agecroft Hall and Virginia House are two early 20th-century homes with gardens designed by landscape architect Charles Gillette. For a more active outdoor adventure in Richmond, ride the only Class IV rapids in an urban U.S. setting on the James River. If golf carts are more your speed, enjoy playing on one of more than 20 public courses.

With its four distinct seasons, the Richmond region is a garden lover's paradise. Check out the one million tulip blooms at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Spring and the annual Historic Garden Week, when some of the area's most gorgeous homes and gardens are opened for public tours.

Richmond is a great place for children; from amusement parks to the Richmond Zoo and a variety of museums, young visitors will never be bored.
